Ingredients

For the Beef

  • ½ lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce

For the Flatbread

  • 2 naan or flatbread
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • ½ small red onion thinly sliced
  • ½ jalapeño sliced
  • ¼ cup canned black beans drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup corn kernels fresh, frozen, or canned

Garnishes

  • 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
  • 1 tbsp sour cream optional
  • 1 tbsp pickled red onions optional

Instructions

Cook the Beef

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed. Stir in chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Cook for another minute, then add barbecue sauce. Stir to coat and let it simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat.

Assemble the Flatbread

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the naan or flatbread on a baking sheet. Sprinkle half of the cheese over the flatbreads. Evenly distribute the BBQ beef on top. Add red onions, jalapeños, black beans, and corn. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over everything.

Bake

  1. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.

Garnish & Serve

  1. Top with chopped cilantro and a drizzle of sour cream or pickled red onions if desired. Slice and serve warm!

Pairings

This dish pairs beautifully with a cold Mexican lager or a classic margarita. If you want a non-alcoholic option, a lime agua fresca complements the flavors perfectly. Serve with a side of guacamole and tortilla chips for an extra treat.

FAQs

1. Can I use a different cut of beef?

Yes! Instead of ground beef, you can use shredded brisket or thinly sliced steak for a richer texture.

2. What barbecue sauce works best?

A smoky or chipotle BBQ sauce enhances the Tex-Mex flavors, but a honey or brown sugar-based sauce adds a nice sweetness.

3. Can I make this vegetarian?

Absolutely! Swap the beef for crumbled tofu, black beans, or grilled mushrooms and use the same seasoning blend.

4. Can I use a different flatbread?

Yes! You can use tortillas for a crispier base, pita bread, or even homemade pizza dough for a thicker crust.
