Ingredients

For the Filet Mignon

  • lbs filet mignon cut into 1-inch cubes (the most luxurious steak for hibachi!)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp mirin or dry sherry
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for searing
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Hibachi Vegetables (Zucchini & Onions)

  • 2 medium zucchini sliced into half-moons
  • 1 large yellow onion sliced into strips
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Hibachi Sauce Recipe (Yum Yum-style)

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 –2 tsp water to thin, if needed

Instructions

Prep the filet mignon

  1. Cut the filet into bite-sized cubes. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, mirin, and garlic to make a simple hibachi steak marinade. Toss the filet pieces in and let them soak while you prep the rest.

Cook the vegetables

  1. Heat sesame oil and butter in a hot skillet or wok. Add the zucchini and onions with a splash of soy sauce. Stir-fry for about 5–7 minutes, until tender and caramelized. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. This quick hibachi vegetables recipe is great with nearly any protein.

Sear the steak

  1. In a very hot skillet, heat oil. Add the marinated filet cubes in a single layer. Sear undisturbed for 1–2 minutes per side to get a good crust. Add butter and toss to coat as they finish cooking—medium-rare to medium is ideal for filet mignon.

Make the sauce (optional)

  1. Mix all sauce ingredients until smooth. Serve on the side for dipping or drizzle over your finished hibachi bowls.

Assemble and serve

  1. Spoon the sizzling steak and veggies into shallow bowls. Pair with garlic fried rice or steamed jasmine rice for the full hibachi steak and fried rice experience. A little sauce on top makes it restaurant-level good.
