For all of my South Florida readers, Whole Foods (my Happy Place) and Forgotten Soldiers Outreach (that does incredible work!) are hosting a Memorial Day Weekend Cookout Event that is raising money for our Troops. This is one cookout that I will be attending!

From the Press Release:

For the third consecutive year, Whole Foods Market stores in Boca Raton, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington will host a Memorial Day Weekend fundraiser to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the men and women of the U.S. Military.

In partnership with the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, all three stores will host a Support Our Troops Cookout on Saturday, May 25 from noon – 3 p.m. During the cookout, customers can enjoy a hamburger, hotdog, vegetarian burger, choice of side and a drink for a donation of $5.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Forgotten Soldiers. Customers are invited to write letters of encouragement to our troops or donate toiletries or other items to be included in care packages, which will then be sent to U.S. soldiers serving overseas.

The three stores are located at:

Whole Foods Market Boca Raton – 1400 Glades Road (561) 447-0000

It’s truly a way to support our troops,” said Lynelle Chauncey Zelnar, founder and executive director of Forgotten Soldiers Outreach. “Our sole mission is to reach out to those troops who receive little to no support from the home front, and many of them are from our own backyards.”

Created in 2003, Forgotten Soldiers Outreach is a nonprofit organization that ships care packages filled with donated items and letters to the men and women of the U.S. military serving overseas. Since its inception, Forgotten Soldiers has delivered care packages to more than 250,000 U.S. troops worldwide from all branches of the military.

South Beach on Sunday morning has a silence that is golden or perhaps reminiscent of a ghost town. Tourists and late-night partiers are still snoozing while the residents are heading to a relaxing yoga class or paddle boarding on the early morning bay. It’s a great time to walk the beach or wander through the Miami Botanical Gardens but, as late morning approaches, brunch is the order of business and I am always ready to get down to the business of brunch. The choices are vast on South Beach so here are a few picks that make me long for Sundays.

I often like my brunches tapas style (so I can try more dishes and share plates with friends), and for real tapas, I go to Barceloneta. Headed by Chef Julia Gonzalez and part of the infamous Pubbelly group, Barceloneta provides vibrant Catalan-influenced food, traditional and contemporary. The dish that sounds a siren call in my head from Barceloneta is the Alubias con Botifarra: housemade Catalan Sausage with white beans, roasted peppers and an organic poached egg. I restrained myself from licking the bowl but only because I was distracted by the delightfully sweet and addictive Shishito Peppers with Candied Walnuts and Valdeon Sauce (blue cheese) pooled at the bottom of the plate. Eggs Benedict is mandatory for brunch in my opinion and Barceloneta accommodates my picky palate with their Benedict that includes a Potato Roll, Pork Belly, Serrano Ham, Hollandaise Sauce, & a Poached Organic Egg.

Chef Julia Gonzalez of Barceloneta

Alubias con Botifarra housemade Catalan Sausage with white beans, roasted peppers and an organic poached egg

Some Sundays you wake up craving grits. That never happened to me until I experienced the fresh Adluh South Carolina stone ground cheesy corn grits at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar. I crave their fluffy, creamy and cheesy deliciousness and I guarantee that they don’t taste like most of the grits you have ever experienced. Yardbird has service with a smile and Southern friendliness. Their farm to table classic Southern menu delivers some of my favorites like the Fried Green Tomato BLT (pork belly, pimento cheese & tomato jam with the fried green tomatoes) and the BLT Benedict Cast Iron Casserole (made with a Buttermilk biscuit crumble). Notice there are lots of “B”’s – that is for Yardbird’s dedication to intensely flavorful bacon and pork belly and Virginia ham. If you don’t like pork, you might be an alien or someone who would drool over the rolled in sugar and seated in strawberry jam Pumpkin Beignets. Close your eyes and you are in the South and loving life. Fried chicken is also an option at brunch … fried chicken and bacon? Thank you, Yardbird.

Cheesy Fresh Adluh Grits from Yardbird

Fried Green Tomato BLT from Yardbird

There is another addition to the breakfast and brunch scene on South Beach … FIX at the newly renovated Blue Moon Hotel on Collins Avenue. Fix just opened last season but word of the scrumptious offerings are spreading like wildfire. Lounge by the gorgeous pool under a wood-beamed porch and prepare to be delighted by Chef David Welch’s contemporary menu. I recommend two brunch must-haves: The Kurobota Pork Belly Benedict and the Rice Krispie®-Crusted French Toast. There is no way to be flowery – Chef David Welch has delivered the best pork belly that I have ever eaten. Period. I was a hard sell for the French Toast but after one bite of the brioche bread, bourbon caramel sauce (OMG), mascarpone zabaglione (OMGx2), and fresh strawberries, I am a convert.

The Fried Oyster Po-Boy with the bacon-chive aioli sealed the deal – FIX is here to make a statement and it is “Come and Eat” which I will do again and again. For those who like cocktails with brunch, all cocktails at FIX use freshly juiced fruits when appropriate and when aren’t mimosas appropriate? Or blueberry caipirinhas? Or White Sangrias? The outdoor area is gorgeous and you can have breakfast ALL DAY. BOO-YAH!

A bit off the beach is The Federal Food Drink and Provisions and it is not to be outdone by the South Beach offerings. I am still dreaming about the Bananas Foster French Toast … who doesn’t need more Banana Fosters in their life? The Lobster Roll is a scrumptious addition as well and for me, lobster and brunch are a no-brainer. The menu changes frequently and according to season and holiday. This is a definite place to check in and get your NOM on!

Brunch in South Beach is an adventure – a delectable one that I like to take every week possible. Tell us, what gets you out of bed on a Sunday morning??

Bev, The Healthy Goddess and I live in South Florida and we will be sharing more of our Culinary Adventures in South Florida here on the site. We are also going to be inviting our contributors to share there adventures in respective areas. If you are interested, contact me!

My birthday celebration really kicked off the Eating Marathon. Besides having the great dinner with Chef Todd English and Chile Olive Oil, I had a birthday lunch at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar with Bev, The Healthy Goddess and Eleanor Hoh, Wok Star.

Southern food obsessions are so wonderful and Chef Jeff McInnis and his creations at Yardbird in Miami, Florida are my favorite way to indulge those obsessions. We rolled through dishes like Grilled Hen of the Woods Mushrooms with Butterbean Risotto, Shrimp and Grits and still managed to fit in Chocolate Bread pudding and Peach Cobbler for dessert. These are from my Instagram …

I first experienced the Pubbelly Restaurant Group when I had brunch at Barceloneta (one of my fave South Beach restaurants). After that stupendous brunch, we had to go back for more and eat at ALL four of the Pubbelly restaurants: Barceloneta for dinner, Pubbelly Gastro Pub for dinner, Pubbelly Sushi for lunch and Macchialina for dinner. Each one was so unique and SO delicious … small plate eating is how I like to dine so I can TASTE EVERYTHING!

The Pubbelly Crawl included decadent seasonal dishes at the Pubbelly Gastro Pub like Braised Berkshire Pork Cheeks with potato foam, horseradish cream, caviar jus and Housemade Gnudi with braised shortrib, pumpkin, spinach, shiitake, parmesan and black lager jus. Barceloneta is Tapas at its best and the potato foam appeared there as well with grilled octopus and chorizo. Pubbelly Sushi still makes sure that you get the pork opportunity with a porkbelly and clam roll. The hamachi ceviche with tostones has been haunting me – I could eat it again and again. Macchialina brings the Italians to the Pubbelly table – their seasonal offering of Beet Filled Mezzaluna with brown butter sauce and poppy seeds was a dish that I could eat daily.

Stay tuned for our article coming!

Somehow, we also managed to fit in lunch with some of our amazing Foodie Friends (Eleanor & Linda!). We hit the Design District and Michael’s Genuine to munch our way through delights like the Florida Rock Shrimp & Chorizo Pizza with escarole & manchego cheese (who knew manchego melted so beautifully??) and Mussels with Bacon & Fingerling Potatoes.

In the Design District, we also got to visit with Chef Dena Marino and a sneak peek at the construction going on for the upcoming MC Kitchen due in November. It looks great and an attached market is also something to look forward to!

One of my favorite experiences of the past month was with the Fantabulous Shelley Belly and her Underground Dinner. If you love underground dinners and want to meet and eat with other foodie-type people AND experience outstanding food, then Shelley Belly is the lady to know. It’s all a secret (including the menu) but a secret that tastes divine! Quail eggs with 7 unique salts, Parmesan Brulee, Pork Belly, Fig Tart … your palate will love you and Shelley forever.

The best part about being the child of Foodies is that my Mom is always up for Culinary Adventures. We had a great Sunday Brunch at Max’s Harvest in Delray Beach. I love that they are locally sourced for their food – Heritage Hen Farm being my FAVE. They also have a $15 all you can drink Bloody Mary (or Champagne Cocktail or Sangria) Bar. Great food and I even headed back recently for dinner! Donuts, Pork Belly Benedict and Chicken and Waffles rounded out our brunch visit.

Green Market season is finally starting in South Florida – we are on the flipside schedule. Mom took me down to the Pompano Beach Green Market to meet Captain Norm – her smoked fish guy who also happens to make the BEST smoked mahi fish dip that I have ever had in my life. I have been eating it for lunch! Local veggies were to be found but he is really THE table to visit there! I also picked up some Black Mangrove Honey so look for that to be figuring into upcoming recipes!

After the Green Market, seafood was on our minds. Papa Hughie’s Seafood World in Lighthouse Point delivers fresh seafood to the table at the restaurant and at home when you stop by their incredible seafood market. I had never tried Hog Snapper – it is delectable! Firm and buttery – we had it a Meuniere sauce that gave it a lemony tang. Steamed Ipswich Clams and Grilled Conch meant no room for Stone Crabs which came into season on October 15. I will have to save that for later!

PHEW. And these are just the highlights.

October is shaping up to be a serious FOOD month. This weekend we are attending the Wok Star classes with Eleanor Hoh AND attending a Chile Olive Oil house party with Chef Alex and Sous Chef Jaz.

I knew I was in the right place when I walked into Yardbird Southern Table & Bar for a Saturday Brunch and saw the chalk pig over the kitchen:

Yardbird delivered Pork and a fabulous brunch all served with a genuine smile from our server, Fran. She was the icing on our Southern cake at Yardbird and really made our meal that much more enjoyable with her cheerful disposition.

And it was enjoyable … we bellied up to the Yardbird Southern Table and were not disappointed. I had already spotted the pumpkin beignets before we even arrived and I knew I could not leave without trying them. The Pumpkin Beignets are perfectly fried, rolled in sugar, plated on gorgeous strawberry jam and nestled up to a mound of real whipped cream – so easy to pop them in your mouth and fall in love.

We were assured that the grits - Adluh South Carolina stone ground cheesy corn grits – were not the glue-like grits that I had experienced before and they were correct. Thanks to Yardbird, I am a FRESH GRITS CONVERT. Pillows of fluffy yellow, cheesy (did I mention fluffy!!?) grits … with real flavor. I couldn’t get enough!

The Healthy Goddess actually grew up eating Southern food and agreed that these grits were completely unlike any grits she had ever experienced. ”I never had fresh grits before and now I want them again. This was my favorite dish of the visit!”

My head was spinning when they set down the BLT Benedict Cast Iron Casserole with a Buttermilk biscuit crumble, soft poached organic egg, house cured bacon, cherry tomato salad, frisée, and Hollandaise. The biscuit was hearty enough to hold up to the perfectly poached egg and handle the Hollandaise but the mindblower in this dish is the BACON. I didn’t lick the skillet but I really wanted to. I did mix some of those awesome grits in and WOW … it was like stupendous Southern overload. Usually the salad with this kind of dish is just decoration but I ate it all – the light dressing was perfect on the tomatoes and frisee and complemented the heavier BLT Benedict exactly.

Bev with her Healthy Goddess eyebrow raised was watching me do the Hungry Goddess slurp through the BLT Benedict Casserole. She was munching on her choice of the Morning Quiche with melted leeks, grilled corn, slow roasted tomatoes, butter beans, goat cheese and flaky pie dough. Her thoughts on the quiche: “The quiche really had a remarkable texture – creamy but still solid enough to handle the goodies inside. I did wish for more goodies but the flaky crust and overall flavor of the quiche was really good.”

The quiche was paired with a lovely salad and a light, tasty vinaigrette.

The Piece de Resistance of the visit was the Fried Green Tomato BLT - Heritage Acres Farm pork belly, greens, fried green tomatoes, tomato jam, and house made pimento cheese. I have had fried green tomatoes before but I have NEVER had anything that even resembled this incredibly delectable tower of flavor. Bev and I both remarked on the light breading that still had a satisfying crunch, the flavorful house made pimento cheese which was mixed with farmer’s cheese and the surprising tomato jam that just elevated the whole dish. The pork belly on top was yet another example of the excellent grip that Yardbird has on their pork – cooked to our savory delight and just heavenly when you get a whole bite of each layer.

PHEW. Roll me out of there in a wheelbarrow. Evan, the Front of House Manager was making his rounds and checking on guests and we were tickled to meet him and share our wonderful experience. You can have good food all day but a staff that is pleasant and takes such good care is something special and that was very apparent at Yardbird. Thank you to Evan and Fran taking such good care of us!

Can you believe we did not have the chicken?? After all that, I could not stuff one more bit but now I have the perfect excuse to go back again for dinner. Plus, Chef Jeff McInnis was not in the kitchen when we were there because he had been hosting his special Midnight Chef’s Table Series the night before – this is on my list TO-DO in the next few weeks – check it out every Friday night at Yardbird!

Run Chicken Run – that is what we will be doing ASAP so we can have more luscious food and great service at Yardbird! Catch me if you can – the bacon would be great bait.

A week ago this morning, we were entering Georgia’s Union with growling tummies and expectations of Chef Nate Martin’s Organic Soul Food Southern style. Both the growling tummies and our expectations were met and even improved upon and we had the pleasure of meeting Chef Nate who was already in the kitchen despite running late service the night before!

The interior of Georgia’s Union is washed in cool greys, vivid blues and highlighted by perfectly placed whites and exposed wood beams. The entire dining room is centered by a gorgeous chandelier that had me thinking about how I could re-create the look from my own ceiling. Classy and charming and, since it was practically crack of dawn for South Beach (10am), there were only a few of us digging into brunch.

The menu is simple with some intriguing dishes and combinations and reasonably priced for Brunch. I like having savory, non-breakfast options – that’s the point of brunch so I felt that the menu was well-balanced. The menu also gives the option of a smaller, lower cost plate which was fantastic – more opportunities to try more dishes!

We started with some of the Cold Fixins – The Roasted Tomato and Cucumber Salad and “Bleu Collared” Greens.

My first thought on biting into the crispy cucumbers and lightly roasted tomatoes with generous heaps of farmer’s cheese was CLEAN. The food was fresh, simple, satisfying and CLEAN. The sunflower greens/sprouts added an extra crunch and “green” taste as well. Lightly dressed and perfect to get the palate excited. The $8 plate which was the smaller offering is what we ordered – pictured below.

Both salads got a solid thumbs up from Bev – our Healthy Goddess influence – for taste, presentation, and freshness! In fact her favorite overall dish was the “Bleu Collared” Greens.

The “Bleu Collared” Greens were a dream and I am still craving that salad. Chef Nate created a bowl full of unique flavors that married wonderfully: baby greens, oyster mushrooms, roasted beets, Winter Park black and bleu cheese (OMG!), honey’d pecans and apple cider vinaigrette. I could have eaten another bowl but we had more glorious tastes to experience …

Warning for those that are not Froggievores … I like frog legs. I like fried frog legs with buttermilk dressing and homemade hot sauce EVEN BETTER. Chef Nate’s philosophy and mission for Georgia’s Union is to create food that makes people feel good in their hearts, minds and bodies. The fried food that is on offer is all cooked in non-hydrogenated oils with no trans fats and the oil is changed consistently.

The frog legs arrived in a basket with the dressing and the hot sauce on the side. It was one of the best hot sauces that I have ever had – evoking memories of Lousiana bayou cooking without burning my lips off. It added exactly what was needed for the Gulf Frog Legs – a little bite. The hot sauce is house-made and no, they do not share the recipe but we tried!

Continuing on our tour through Georgia’s Union Hot Fixins, we ordered the liver and onions; Not the traditional liver and onions but golden fried organic chicken livers, caramelized onion aioli and pickled onions. I never turn down aioli – never and I am so glad that is my policy. These perfectly fried little nuggets of chicken liver goodness dipped into that caramelized onion aioli were transporting!

Brunch is not brunch without an Eggs Benedict so I picked the Smoked Fish Hash Southern Bennie with poached eggs, corn-flax muffing, hollandaise, crisp taters and smoked fish hash.

The moment of poking a poached egg and watching the silky yolk pour down the side of a Benedict is a bit sacred for me. You have to take Eggs Benedict seriously after all – the mix of yolk and hollandaise and, in this case, smoked fish is all serious business. And delicious business. The muffin had a bit of sweet that highlighted the smoke of the fish but all was united by mouthfuls of the ingredients together. Who would have thought?

One more dish on our tour through Brunch at Georgia’s Union and it turned out to be my most favorite dish of the day. Since eating at some wonderful Southern restaurants lately, grits, more specifically, FRESH GRITS, are a revelation to me. I always thought they tasted like glue and never bothered but FRESH GRITS are whole different story. Light, fluffy and truly something I could eat every day, so when I saw the “Crayfish” and Grits on the menu, I knew I had to taste it.

Florida spiny lobster (season just starting!!), Riverview Farms white corn grits, green onions, roasted tomatoes, lobster jus and topped with a sprinkle of lobster roe … this dish was magnificent. I will admit to wanting more of a bite to the “crayfish” so I availed myself of the hot sauce sitting on the table and O.M.G., it was precisely what I wanted. A mound of fresh white corn grits with lobster and lobster jus dripping down the sides – People … this is HEAVEN. And you can have it bite after bite.

Our visit ended with a chat with Chef Nate Martin who quite simply ROCKS. He is down to earth and passionate about his food and the quality. He spoke about his mission for Georgia’s Union food – to make people feel GOOD after they eat there; to allow people who are sensitive to foods a place to come and relax knowing that the food is prepared healthfully and the ingredients are locally sourced, organic and handpicked. Check the back of the menu to see all of the local growers and artisans that they work with. Early in our visit, we spoke with the excellent Front of House Manager, Alex, who also shared that mission. What a wonderful thing to have a knowledgeable team that shares the vision and mission AND executes it.

I cannot wait to eat at Georgia’s Union again … I still have the Georgia Cobbler to taste and Pecan Tart and oh so many other wonderful dishes from the Organic Soul of Chef Nate. Add Georgia’s Union to your list and for just a bit, relax into honest-to-goodness great food.

Mimi’s Ravioli in Hollywood tastes like home to me. After growing up in Northern Delaware with a thriving Little Italy community and neighborhoods plus having access to the Italian culture of South Philadelphia, Italian food and cooking is in my blood through osmosis. Italian dishes cooked by my Mom and family friends who were part of my life from birth formed a strong bond for me for the Italian food culture.

This weekend, I had the chance to get down to Hollywood and actually shop at Mimi’s and explore their jam-packed market. Fresh pasta, bread, cheese, sausage; an array of prepared foods; baked goods to make you weep; made-to-order pizza made in their new brick oven (REAL Sicilian pizza); a multitude of Italian oils, sauces, condiments, gourmet products; and a busy counter dispensing orders in rapid fire succession all overseen by the owner, Linda Billisi who is handling customers at the counter in a fast patter of English, Spanish and Italian.

Linda Billisi – Owner of Mimi’s Ravioli

HOME. It felt like home, smelled like home and when you eat their food it tastes like HOME – it is home cooking direct from Mimi’s kitchen to yours – nothing pretentious in between.

I may not eat pasta very often anymore in my attempts to eat about 80% gluten free, but one exception that I happily make is for Mimi’s Raviolis- I buy them frozen at several of the markets in Delray Beach (The Boys Market carries a great selection) or my parents pick them up when they are down near the Hollywood location of Mimi’s. My family has been eating Mimi’s pasta products since we moved to South Florida over 20 years ago – Mimi’s has been in business over 40 years! Manicotti, cannelloni, stuffed shells, tortelloni – all wonderful.

A dab of sauce is all that is needed for the plump pillows because the pasta and fillings are SO flavorful – there are so many selections: Black truffle and porcini mushrooms (one of my purchases), butternut squash, artichoke and pesto, goat cheese, eggplant and tofu, pumpkin, lobster, Mascarpone and more.

Their homemade Mozzarella cheese is the best I have ever had. The texture, the flavor (and yes, it has a smooth and creamy FLAVOR) it is simply THE BEST- and accompanies the bread and pastas perfectly.

As I scooped my purchases and brought them to the counter, Linda eyed what I was buying – she asked if I needed sauce and then she spied the multi-purpose gluten free flour that I was buying so I could try it for pizza dough. She asks me if I have seen their gluten free pastas and my jaw dropped – Mimi’s is making Gluten Free?!?

YES … YES … Mimi’s is now making GLUTEN FREE RAVIOLI and PASTA and COOKIES … I will be cooking them this week and reporting back!

No longer will I be buying my Mimi’s up here in Delray – I am addicted to the market now so I can go down and really experience all of the amazing foods that Mimi’s offers. It is worth the drive and the time and it brings me a little slice of home. And that pizza … I have to have some of that pizza.

Barceloneta is one of the Pubbelly-owned restaurants and the brainchild of Partner and Executive Chef Juliana Gonzales who we had the delight of meeting. I would also mention that Chef Juliana was a runner-up in the James Beard Awards for 2012 for best Chef in the South – her energy and smile is contagious and her food is glorious.

Barceloneta is a place where I would eat every week if I lived nearby. A standing brunch, lunch, dinner appointment would suit me and my tummy.

It is warm & friendly, a bit noisy, full of light and delivers an amazing range of tapas-like dishes to entertain your palate. I am still craving the Catalan sausage that they create in-house. And the shishito peppers. And the beet salad. I may have to move to South Beach just so I can eat there more often. The prices are just what you would expect and the quality was high enough that I did even second glance the check.

Service was cheerful and attentive – our dishes came out quickly but not so quickly that we could not enjoy the progression. Approach your experience at Barceloneta like tapas – dishes to share – the three of us munched our way through four dishes in the center of the table and it was just right.

The shishito peppers with candied walnuts and valdeon sauce (blue cheese) is unique and addictive – the peppers are sweet and mild and sprinkled with candied walnuts with the valdeon sauce at the bottom of the plate. Did I mention that they are addictive?

The ensalada de remolacha – beet salad was gorgeous to behold and even better to eat. A slightly creamy dressing and some crunch to make it interesting. The beets offset the peppers perfectly.

It cannot be brunch in my world without Eggs Benedict but the twist on traditional Eggs Benedict at Barceloneta was exactly right – Potato Roll, Pork Belly, Serrano Ham, Hollandaise Sauce, & a Poached Organic Egg. I would like to have had more of the pork belly but I am greedy that way.

The Piece de Resistance … the dish that BLEW ME AWAY … the food that siren calls in my head was the Alubias con Botifarra: housemade Catalan Sausage with white beans, roasted peppers and a an organic poached egg – the only thing that I wished for was some toast to scoop it all up like a heathen. The pork sausage was superb and then paired with the beans … heaven.

Let me wrap this up easily for you – Barceloneta is one of those MUST GO places. Go by yourself, take your friends, go on a date – JUST GO. In the Miami world of good food, Barceloneta is something special – it is truly GREAT.
